Japan is famous of summer festival, in the past it was to ward off evil spirits, (花火大会:hanabi taikai)are a part of the charm of Japanese summers. In July and August, there are thousands of festivals throughout the country.


The biggest festival, begins in the late afternoon, when the festival atmosphere settles into the streets, friends and family go out together wearing Yukata and enjoying drinks and delicious food like Yakisoba, Takoyaki and Okonomiyaki.

The famous festival are so crowded, we need to manage our time to arrive 3-4 hours in advance to get a seat, and wait a while before returning to avoid crowding on trains and buses.

The famous festivals :

Sumida river festival
Asakusa station and Sumida river
July 25th from 19:00 to 20:30


One of the oldest and famous festival in Japan that attracts a huge people (good luck finding a spot). To see the fireworks from the parks along the river. the best is to not have ruined the view by buildings.

Tokyo bay
Harumi, Toyosu and Odaiba
August 8th from 18:50 to 20:10


It stands in north of Rainbow Bridge. The best views are in Harumi Park (15 minutes walk from Toyosu station) and from Odaiba. Some places are free, but to get there early enough to find a spot. Note that the Rainbow Bridge is closed to pedestrians during the show.

Kanagawa Shimbun Fireworks Festival
Minato Mirai, Yokohama
August 4th From 19:00 to 20:30

The biggest festival of Yokohama summer, attracts nearly 1 million people. The port is most nice place to enjoy the show
more than 15,000 rockets are launched.

Other festivals :

Edogawa Hanabi (Shinozaki Park) : August 1st, from 19:15 to 20:30

Itabashi Hanabi (Itabashi) : August 1st, from 19:00 to 20h30

Jingu Gaien Hanabi (Meiji Jingu Gaien) :  August 11th, from 19:30 to 20:30

Tamagawa Hanabi (Futako Tamagawa) : August 22nd, from 19:00 to 20:00
