It’s an old tradition since 273 years ago.

The festival is around the Osakabe temple. Originally, this place of worship was located on a hill, not publicly accessible. It is in 1742 that Masamine Sakaibara, Lord of Himeji Castle, decided to move the temple close to the city and open to the public. A party was quickly organized to celebrate. However, as was done at the last minute, the inhabitants of the city did not have the time to buy a kimono. So they were allowed to go in yukata, clothing that did not wear in public at the time.

Every year, the population continued to wear this summer clothes to celebrate this festival.
