Rainy season… Also fireflies

June is usually synonymous of rainy season. Not the best time to go out or for tourism. But also June in Japan, it is also for the fireflies season or Hotaru in Japanese!

Enjoy fireflies at nightfall is an ancient custom in Japan and very present in the culture, literature and classical poetry. This particular custom is already indicated in some of the oldest manuscripts of Japanese literature such as “Nihon Shoki” and “Man’yōshū”.

Nowadays, it is still possible to enjoy the wonderful spectacle offered by these luminescent insects. And not just in the country! Although one can imagine that fireflies have long deserted the major concrete cities, it is still possible to admire the nocturnal magic of fireflies in Tokyo! One of “hotaru spot” the most famous of the capital is in the sumptuous gardens of the Hotel Four Seasons – Chinzan-sô (close to Waseda / Mejiro) and the “Firely Evenings”.
