Yakushima is an island situated in the south of Kyushu around 60klm (Kagoshima prefecture).

It is covered by an extensive cedar forest that contains some of Japan’s oldest living trees. Trees more than 1000 years old are affectionately called yakusugi

Having mysterious virgin forests and a diverse range of peculiar ecosystems, is referred to as the Galapagos of East Asia. You can enjoy various eco-tours in the nature’s treasure trove.

A cedar tree discovered in 1996 and situated at an altitude of 1350 m is assumed to be the largest and the oldest in the world, and is called ‘Jomon sugi’ (there are various theories as to its age, from 2170 to 7200 years old).

The island became  Natural World Heritage Site in 1993
